Map Intelligence with your GIS Applications

Map Intelligence offers a very powerful way to capitalize and leverage any prior investments you have made in specialized GIS applications by very easily connecting them with Map Intelligence’s BI integrations.  From within any BI environment, Map Intelligence can export MI generated visualization layers as WMS.  These layers can be viewed within existing business applications with embedded, dynamic map services from vendors such as Google, Mapbox or Bing.

What is WMS?

A Web Map Service (WMS) is a standard protocol for serving geo-referenced map images over the Internet that are generated by a map server using data that is typically sourced from a GIS database. WMS was developed and published by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and is now a well recognized and deployed standard.

Business Intelligence and WMS

The Map Intelligence WMS capability provides a generic, standard method of exchanging data between Business Intelligence tools (including Excel) and map servers capable of handling WMS. This removes the two major concerns for enterprise managers who want to utilize their organization's BI data views with their existing GIS applications.

  1. There is no need to spend time and money on custom integrations between existing GIS applications (that typically involves a proprietary spatial database) and the organization's business reporting tools accessing the corporate data warehouse.
  2. Use of the WMS standard ensures only minimal support might be required as new versions of GIS and BI software are released.

All BI platforms for which there is an MI Client are supported. The map servers that can provide WMS include:

  • Esri's ArcGIS Server
  • Spectrum Spatial from Pitney Bowes (MapInfo)
  • GE Smallword
  • GeoWebPublisher from Bentley Systems
  • GeognoSIS from Cadcorp
  • GeoMedia
  • Oracle MapViewer
  • ObjectFX Web Mapping Tools
  • LizardTech's Express Server and SuperMap

Open-source software providing WMS capability include

WMS in Action

Solar is a custom location application built by the Australian Federal Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). Solar was implemented using the Google Maps API and MapXtreme from Pitney Bowes.  WMS layers dynamically generated by Map Intelligence are read on the fly by Solar whenever the Solar Business Intelligence application makes a request. DEEWR staff can quickly display their data (e.g from their Excel spreadsheet) as map layers over the Solar map interface.
